FIVE TIMES CLEANING: At the center of a Panchakarma cure are the five cleansing procedures. Their names are Virechan, Basti, Vaman, Nasya and Raktamokshana.
These terms stand for: laxative measures, herbal enemas, nausea therapy, nasal rinsing and bloodletting. The gastrointestinal tract, esophagus, respiratory tract and blood vessels are thus freed from harmful substances.
PREPARE THE BODY: Suitable treatments usually precede the respective cleaning cycles. Heat and oils are particularly important.
They ensure that the vessels dilate and that toxins and waste products are released and mobilized. This makes it easier for them to be transported away as part of the cure.
NUTRITION DURING A PANCHAKARMA TREATMENT: It is also important to prepare for a Panchakarma cure with light food and digestive measures in order to protect the intestines.
Likewise, after the drainages, an appropriate follow-up treatment is part of the complete Panchakarma program.
At the beginning of the Ayurvedic diagnosis, the doctor determines the dosha constitution of the patient. It is the basis for the development of the therapy plan and the selection of the right herbs and medicines. In order to diagnose the prevailing constellation, Ayurveda doctors have various instruments at their disposal. The external appearance of the patient and the doctor’s conversation provide the first clues.
With the Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis (Nadi Vigyan) the doctor can obtain further information about the dosha constellation. But the condition of the organs and possible disorders can also be diagnosed. The Ayurvedic tongue diagnosis supports the doctor in diagnosing an imbalance of the doshas and digestive disorders. Only a well-founded diagnosis by an experienced Ayurveda doctor reveals the dosha constitution and enables the right treatment.
Elements of Panchakarma were already known to the authors (Rishis) at the time when the Vedas were created. Even in this early period of Ayurveda there are references to Vamana (therapy through vomiting) and Virechana (purgative therapy). Dhanvanthari, the prince of Ayurveda, is shown holding a jalooka (leech) in his hand. This indicates that forms of bloodletting were already being used as a purification method. Nasya (nose rinsing therapy) was also mentioned in Vedic literature. Panchakarma as a comprehensive therapy system took shape at the time of the oldest surviving Ayurveda collection, the ‘Caraka Samhita’. The origin of writing is dated to 2,000 BC. to 700 BC. estimated.
Contraindications of the Panchakarma regimen: A Panchakarma cure demands a lot from body and mind. For this reason, it cannot be carried out at any point in time. For some people it is even completely unsuitable. For example for children, since they are still growing. Even those who feel physically weak or are still dealing with the after-effects of an illness or an operation should postpone such a cure – or even reconsider it completely. Sometimes, however, it is possible to gradually prepare the weakened organism for a Panchakarma cure with other Ayurvedic treatments.
Panchakarma takes time: Basically, it should be noted: A complete Panchakarma cure requires a lot of time and cannot be carried out alongside normal everyday life. At best, the preparation phase can possibly be implemented in everyday life. For the main part of the cure with the various detoxifications, you should definitely take the time off completely.
